Next up was the first match of the NWA tag-team title tournament, as Lords of K.A.O.S. took on crowd favorites D-Ray 3000 and Sean Casey. KAOS reigned in this one much to the crowd's chagrin.
Tournament continued as" Legion" (with manager T.K.Parker) faced off against the team of Grizzly House Jones, and Buzz Manson. Legion proved much too powerful and got the victory.
Third tournament bout saw' The Sons Of Michigan' (Benjamin Boone and Nate Mattson) take on the over-matched, but always game, team of Andrew Lee and Tre Miguel. The team from Michigan was way too much for Lee and Miguel. The only issue in doubt was how long it would take. Folks, it took longer than you might have suspected, but still not so long.
Boone, and Mattson shook hands with their vanquished opponents in a rather saccharine display of sportsmanship, and congratulated them on a game effort.
Last match of the opening round, saw the "Glass City Saints," take on the much larger team of "Terror Khan," and "Mustafa," managed by the "Potentate Of Hate." In a mild upset, the "Saints" got the win over their foes. The defeated baddies took out their disappointment by punishing the victors with repeated "big splashes
Next up was a "Battle Royal," to determine the competitors for the TV Championship match on next months card. A dozen gladiators entered the ring. After several minutes of action, the last four competitors were Gran Akuma, Will Stud, D-Ray3000, and Chris Korvis (managed tonight by Andrew Chene) rounded out the field.
First Stud, and then Korvis, went over top rope. D-Ray and Akuma battled on even terms for several minutes before D-Ray vanquished his rival. As the final two survivors, Akuma and D-Ray, will meet on October 20th for the TV title. As winner D-Ray had the choice of stipulations. So, the TV championship will be decided in a Ladder Match!
Time for a ten-minute intermission.
After break, more tag tourney action, as Sons Of Michigan met the Glass City Saints. The Saints showed the effects of the beatdown they had received at the hands of their earlier foes, but put on a valiant effort before losing to the motor city duo. Again a show of sportsmanship by Boone, and Mattson leaves me strangely unconvinced.
Next semi-final tag bout between Legion and Lords of KAOS, never really gets underway, as the teams battle wildly outside the ring. Eventually the commish, Angel Bailey, decides to make the final of the tag tourney a three-way match between Sons Of Michigan; Lords of KAOS, and Legion.
First though was the Midwest Championship match pitting champion Sebastian Rose against Chris Korvis(with Andrew Chene). This was quite entertaining, and well paced. Korvis was ragged mercilessly by the audience who accused him first of stealing the late Rick Rude's gimmick, and then of being a Ric Flair wannabe. Despite the best (worst?) efforts of Korvis and Chene, it was Rose successfully defending his title.
Now it was time for the Tag Tournament final as KAOS, Sons of Michigan, and Legion (with T.K. Parker) squared off in a three-way bout for the title. After a deceptively calm beginning Lords of KAOS, and Sons of Michigan and T.K. Parker, all ganged up on the outnumbered duo of Legion, who took a frightful beating in the ensuing, well, chaos, The Lords of KAOS picked up the win (I think--hard to be certain!) and the Sons Of Michigan picked up a new manager, the traitorous T.K Parker!
Next up was a long overdue apology from "The Francise:" Shane Douglas who delivered a monologue on his twenty years ago trashing of the NWA Title Belt, at the launching of ECW. This was followed by a state of the business address that was interrupted by "Potentate of Hate," and his charge, Mustafa.. The effect was to suck the energy out of the arena, before the main event. It would have played better at the start of the second half of the show than where it was placed. (IMHO).
Oh yeah the main event, Damien Wayne (of the L.O,K,) NWA National Champion defended against Nitro (of Legion) who was battered and bleeding from his earlier beating in the Tag final. It was the classic tale of the hero (newly minted) rising from the ashes to overcome the odds and gain the win! As Nitro fought his way to the win. It was a feel good ending to the night's action
Now a word to the management, work on pacing, and keeping the action going from start to finish Of course you can "sweeten the product" for television, but don't leave the live audience guessing at :what just happened?" Not if you want to build that live audience.
Next show will be October 20, 2013 at the IBC in Oregon, with a 5:00 PM start time.
