Somerset Hall in Toledo, was once again the venue for Powerbomb Championship Wrestling on November 21. A crowd of 200 or so fans witnessed a wild night of old school wrestling action.
The opener saw Tim Horner, Jr. take on "Whip Dog" ("what's my name?"). These were both new performers to this writer, and they put on a good basic match, won by good guy Horner, with a missile dropkick and a pin.
Next up Tag Champions, Jason "The Sharp Dressed Man" Harris, and his partner Rodney Van Dorn III, took on Denzell Titan and his partner Phil Atlas. This was just an excellent match. Incorporating lots of back and forth action by all four men. The end came when Crimson, making his first appearance of the night, sprayed the "red mist" into Atlas's eyes.
The referee disqualified Harris and Van Dorn, but they retained the titles. At this point, as the stricken Atlas was led away to the dressing room, and Titan seemed in danger of receiving a beatdown from the heels, Titan's original partner in the "CIA," Black Velvet came runnung to make the save.
Now recovered from an injury that sidelined him for eight months, velvet cleared the ring of bad guys, and to the delight of fans chanting "CIA, CIA," issued a challenge to the Tag Champions for title match. A request that was granted for the January 2, 2011 card.
Third match was a grudge match between D-Ray 3000, and his frequent tormentor, Sebastian Rose. This was won by the very popular D-Ray with a roll-up, that came almost out of nowhere. It was now time for intermission.
After the break, Sin-D took on Amanda Ruffin in a women's match. The crowd was really into this one, as" bratty heel" Ruffin cheated at every opportunity, eventually gaining a pin while holding onto the ropes with both hands. The very vocal crowd, which was solidly behind Sin-D, began a "rematch!" chant.
Next up was another grudge match as local hero, Brian "New Age Patriot" Castle sought revenge against Benjamin Boone. As you may recall at the last PCW show, a jealous Boone flattened Castle with the trophy that Castle received as "Dick The Bruiser" Rookie Of The Year.
This time the two battled to a double countout (not a popular decision with the crowd!). Castle then demanded, and was granted, a "falls count anywhere" rematch on the next card.
Now it was time for the main event. A six man tag pitting the team of 420 lb "Voodoo Murderer," Pastor Pain, and Crimson against the teal of Andy Chene, Bobo Brazil, Jr, and (thanks to a special 24 hour pass from the asylum for the criminally insane) Dr. jerry Graham's brother, Fabian Aloysius Graham. F. A. Graham was wheeled to ringside on a hand cart in cuffs and looking much like Hannibal Lecter!
The melee that ensued saw Percival Friend at ringside once again flattened (he suffered a similar fate last month at the hands of Benjamin Boone). Pastor Pain was pinned for the official verdict won by Graham-Brazil-Chene. But the night was not over, as Voodoo Murderer, and Brazil continued to battle. VM issued a challenge, quickly accepted, for a title match against Champion Brazil on the next card.
While all this was going on, Fabian made a successful run for the exit with brother Jerry, and several deputies, in hot pursuit! Returning without the escapee, Dr Graham ended the night's action by ruefully observing: "we won, but victory at what price? I've allowed my dangerous brother to be loosed upon the city."
Wonder if they will catch the dangerous escapee in time for the next card?

Price of Glory's Coldwater show features "A Fist Full of Dollar," and a Stray cat
November,7th saw Price Of Glory wrestling present both an exciting, if flawed, card and a search for a new home for a stray cat who had been dropped off at POG's home, the Michigan Sports Camp, the site for tonight's card.
Let's get to the action:
1) Parker James took on Joseph "The Hebrew Hammer" Schwartz,(accompanied by VIP promoter, Jamie P.) Schwartz used a piledriver to pick up the victory.
2) Osyris squared off against his last month tag partner, "The SI." SI is rapidly becoming the Santino Marella of the midwest, his comic persona gets better with each outing. In Osyris he faced a foe about twice his size. Both men played their roles well with Osyris literally tieing SI into a knot, before winning with a figure four leglock. In many ways the best, certainly the most entertaining match of the night.
3) A six man tag pitting Main Street Youth (Adam Bueller, Scott Young, and Ryan Epic)defeat Uncle Funky, and his Special Team (Ninja Joe, and "Dynamite" McFeters). After Main Street Youth almost self-destructed due to internal dissension, they pulled it together long enough to polish off Uncle Funky and company.
4)A "Four Corners" match saw Noah Lott put the Chaotic title on the line against against Jamie Eternal, Jack Verville, and Louis Lynden. Eternal pinned Verville to win the title.
After an intermission:
5) A "Battle Royal" featuring everyone who had already wrestled, plus a few more. The prize? an immediate Tag Title match for the last two men in the ring. This was truly chaotic. Keith Creme, and Mr. Nifty, both representing VIP Wrestling, were the survivors.
6) They immediately faced Tag Champs, "The Believers" (Mike Musso and Russ Jones) accompanied by the always annoying Max Morrison. Jamie P. joined his "Team VIP," at ringside. Team VIP picked up the win and the tag titles.
7) Main event time! POG champion Dollar putting the belt on the line against Glory Cup winner Sean Tyler. How can your reporter put this politely? Dollar needs to work on those abs! Enough said.
This was a fan favorite vs fan favorite bout, and was at times plodding. Tyler scored the upset win. Jimmie Shalwin (with the ubiquitous Max Morrison) came to ringside and challenged Tyler to an immediate match. Tyler accepted, and was quickly choked out by Shalwin. As Shalwin held court midring, disgruntled fans filed out.
In my opinion, someone got to cute with booking this one. Instead of ending with the "feel good" moment of Tyler's hard earned victory, the booker chose to close the night with a "buzz-killer" moment. The fans walking out on Shalwin's win seemed more disgusted, than angry. disgust doesn't fill seats!
POG will have to win them back in time for the December 5th show. Featuring a triple threat title match pitting Shalwin against Dollar, against Sean Tyler (who may have set a record for the shortest title reign!).

Renamed Toledo Promotion Launches New Season at Somerset Hall
Dr. Jerry graham, Jr.'s promotion repackaged as PowerBomb Championship Wrestling, but with most of the same performers, returned successfully tonight (October 17th)with an exciting 9 bout card.
On hand to witness the card, in addition to about 150 fans, were guests Samoan wrestler, Sika, one half of the Hall Of Fame team The Wild Samoans (on hand to watch his son, 420 lb Voodoo Killer in the main event), and famed manager Percival A. Friend, on hand to present an award. Now to the matches.
First four matches were a series of challenge matches to introduce some new wrestlers squaring off some familiar stars. First up: D-Ray 3000, a local favorite versus the debuting "Insane Wayne," who came to the ring to the theme of Sesame Street, and carrying an Elmo doll. Not even Oscar the Grouch could have helped Wayne, as he fell quickly to a missile dropkick. D-Ray wins in less than three minutes.
Second match saw 295lb former WWA champion, Will Studd defeat Reed bentley with a Sidewalk Slam in another short bout.
Next up Denzell Titan, 1/2 of the Team CIA, took on Sebastion Stardust. Titan won handily with a variation of the codebreaker in about two minutes.
In the last of the challenge matches, Cage Butler was totally squashed by Sebastion Rose. Rose continued to punish his outclassed foe after winning, until D-Ray stormed the ring to save Butler from further damage.
Match number five saw "Amazing" N8 Mattson, have an excellent match with Will Studd. This was an evenly fought affair, with Studd ultimately winning by using the ropes for leverage as he pinned Mattson.
last match before intermission was for the Tag Title relinquished by team CIA, due to a broken leg suffered by Black velvet. Denzell Titan and Halloween took on The Sharp Dressed Man--Jason Harris, and his protege Rodney Van Dorn III (aka "Pitbull").
This was a text book tag battle with all the familiar ploys developed over the years to get the fans cheering their favorites, and screaming at the heels! All four men played their roles well, with Harris using a foriegn object to polish off Titan and gain the tainted victory. Time for intermission.
After the break, local favorite Brian Castle took on Benjamin Boone, in the scientific match of the night. Castle won with a small package pin. The two shook hands, and then the announcer, and Percy Friend entered the ring to present the "Dick The Bruiser Rookie of the Year" trophy to Castle. After congratulating Castle on his award Boone, in the least surprising move of the night, suddenly went Postal using the trophy to flatten Castle, and everyone else in the ring!
Note: having an award presented in the ring pretty much guarantees that bad things are going to happen.
Match number eight saw D-Ray 3000 take on "Prime Time" Tommy Dempsey. This was very entertaining, as Prime Time played the heel role to perfection. Just when D-Ray seemed on the verge of victory, Sebatian Rose interfered. This allowed Dempsey to win with a pile driver. Afterwards D-Ray and Rose battled to the back.
Main Event time as Andy Chene, and Bobo Brazil, Jr., were led to the ring by Dr. Jerry Graham, Jr. to meet Pastor Pain's newest incarnation of evil, Krimson, and Voodoo Killer. This was another in a series of violent brawls that saw the "war by proxies," waged by Pain and Graham continue.
Finally, Voodoo and Krimson picked up the official win, but that was only the beginning as Krimson sprayed an orange liquid (it looked suspiciously like Kool Aid) into Graham's eyes. Graham had to be carried to the back, where the ring announcer's microphone picked up his howls of pain.
On that odd note, the show ended. However one can be sure that next card on November 21st, will follow up on many themes introduced tonight,

Price Of Glory Card Built Around "Glory Cup" Tournament
October 3rd was a chilly experience in Coldwater, but inside the Michigan Sports Camp the temperature was white hot as the resident gladiators laid it all on the line in pursuit of fame and glory!
The card was built around the annual tournament for the prestigious Glory Cup. The eight finalists were:Magnum Conroy, Louis Linden, Jake Omen, Noah Lott, Jack Verville, Sean Tyler, Roderick Street,"The Hype" Jimmy Shalwin. There were also two title bouts, and a special handicap match.
First up, Noah Lott took on Sean Tyler, in a battle of fan favorites. Lott appeared to be trying on a heel persona, but the crowd wasn't buying it. So both men wound up in a "scientific" encounter. This was a battle of evenly matched competitors. Surprisingly, Jack Verville ran in to interfere as Lott was gaining the advantage, leading to Tyler scoring the win with a spinning neck-breaker and pin.
Second Tournament match was next, as Jake Omen (accompanied by Ryan Epic, and Scotty Young) battled the ubiquitous Jack Verville, for some reason Epic and Young declined to intervene on Omen's behalf. Even stranger, the crowd was pretty well split between the two grapplers!
Omen eventually scored the win, and Noah Lott ran in and assaulted the defeated Verville.
Third bout was a "four on one" handicap match pitting the "Masked Monster Jamie Eternal against "Uncle Funky," and his 3-man special team (who were pretty much destroyed at last month's card). Uncle Funky, et. al, proved no match at all for the Monster, and were quickly routed. At least they are learning how to take bumps!
Bout four saw Roderick Street accompanied by "Chippy,"(don't ask!) take on former Chaotic Champion Louis Linden. This was a solid, competitive affair but Linden's impressive aerial skills, capped by a spectacular moonsault, gained him the pin victory.
final bout before the break saw Jimmy "the Hype," with plenty of help from chief acolyte, "Gameboy" Nate Mattson, take the measure of Magnum Conroy with a chokeslam.
Time for Intermission!
After the break, a Tag Title bout got things off with a bang. Due to an injury suffered by Idol Heinze, his partner, the always intimidating Osyris, was forced to take "The SI" as his partner. Note: I think the "SI" is beginning to grow on POG's fan base!
This odd couple were defending the belts against three other teams: The Believers, Mike Russo, and Russ Jones, Team Hardcore (Hardcore Harry and Hardcore Harley); Ryan Epic and Scotty Young were the final team in this match. I have to confess that I thought this might be a real cluster mess.
Actually though, it was quite a spectacular match, filled with high-flying action in and, especially, out of the ring. In the end Musso and Jones won the match, and the titles. Don't feel too bad for Osyris, and Heinz. They have been so dominant as tag champs, that no one even seemed capable of beating them. Drama, and unpredictability have now been added to the Tag Team scene.
In a Glory Cup semi-final bout, Shalwin defeated Linden, with a well timed spray of Kool Aid, to advance to the GC final match.
In the other semi-final bout. Sean Tyler beat Jake Omen for the other final spot in the Glory Cup final, with a spinning neck breaker.
Almost lost in the excitement of the Glory Cup final, the next to last bout of the evening was a heavyweight title match pitting POG Champion Dollar, against VIP Wrestling's chosen challenger, the ever crafty, Keith Creme. Creme showed Verville, and Lott, how the heel character is played, as he insulted everyone within range, cheated at every turn, and belittled and insulted the champ at every turn.
Creme was accompanied by VIP owner, Jamie P., but even Jamie could prevent Dollar from a successful defense, as he forced Creme to tap out to a cloverleaf (sort of a cross between a Boston Crab and a figure four leglock). Could the VIP invasion be running out of steam?
Now it was time for the Glory Cup final: Jimmy "The Hype" Shalwin Vs Sean Tyler, late of the Kosher Klub. This match also had action in and out of the ring. In the end Tyler locked a variation of a sleeper hold on Shalwin. All hope for the Hype's aspirations ended as the referee signalled for the bell.
In a nice touch, lots of the "faces" came out to celebrate Tyler's victory, effectively making the point that it is a big deal! The fans cheered as well as they headed out into the chilly night.

CLASH Wrestling Show Wows Taylor, Michigan!
September 17, at TaylorTown trade Center: CLASH Wrestling staged a highly entertaining card. Truth Martini was introduced as new CEO of CLASH, and soon made a dramatic change to the first bout ob the evening. It was scheduled to be Tag Title match pitting the team of Dave Manzo and Jack "Night" Life against Champs, The Wrecking Ball, and Will Vendetta.
But Vendetta, failed to appear, so Martini ordered Wrecking Ball to forfeit the title belts (which he reluctantly did). The bout was then changed to a "Six Way Fray," pitting Austin Mannix, Tommy Trznik, Tyler Elkins, Cameron Skyy,"450," and The Wrecking Ball.
Lots of high spots in this one, the most spectacular of which saw three men diving over the top rope onto the three seeking sanctuary on the outside. In the end Tyler Elkins pinned Cameron Skyy, to get the coveted final entry into the main event "All Out War." Skyy, who was pinned by Elkins was given the first entry position in the main event. A tough spot for anyone hoping to win the main event.
Next up was a Tag Team "gauntlet match: two teams start, the winning team faces a third team , and the winner of this contest, faces a fourth, and final, team. The winner of this final match would be crowned new Tag champions.
Starting off was Victorious Secret(Mason Conrad, and Cameron Salem) from "Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, California." Their foes, fresh from 1980's television, were the Power Rangers, "Blue," and "Gold"
The mighty Power Rangers gave it their best shot, but fell victim to their opponents wiles.
Next up Kosher Klub, Sean Tyler and Joseph Schwartz took on the "Victorious" team from Beverly Hills, and quickly established themselves as the heel team. Schwartz scored the winning pin, and he and partner Tyler awaited the final team.
The final team proved to be the "Bump-n-Uglies," in their usual Lucha masks. There were a lot of comedy spots in this one. However when things got serious, the "Uglies" proved to have the measure of Kosher Klub, and won the Tag Titles, to the delight of the hundred plus fans in attendance!
Next up was fast rising Detroit Women's star, Mina Libra, taking on Randi West. Truth Martini came to the ring and began to cut a promo on Mina, who fired right back. She demanded a spot(much to the delight of the fans!) in "All Out War," which Martini agreed to but added words to the effect of "be careful what you ask for."
In the match, Randi tried her best, but in the end fell to the talented Mina! Sending a delighted crowd happily towards the vendor tables as intermission began!
After the break, it was time for "All Out War." Tommy Treznik (1/2 of Team H3RD) started with Cameron Skyy. A new competitor would enter every two minutes, and a wrestler could be eliminated by being tossed over the top rope and touching both feet on the floor.
The order of entry, as I wrote it: 3. Keith calhoun, 4. Bryce Benjamin, 5. Mina Libra, 6. didn't get this gentleman's name, 7. Truth Martini, 8. Brandon Bishop, 9. Malice, 10. Tommy Hallows, 11. Wrecking Ball, 12. Jacob Hallows 13. Austin Mannix,
14. Hakim Mane, 15. Jimmy Jacobs (late of ROH), 16. Jack Verville, 17. Ray Killbourne 18. Travis Kreed, 19. "Sweet" Willie Watts, 20. Another name I couldn't catch (entrants were coming in, and tossed out at a pretty fast pace by this point!), 21. Gavin "GQ" Quade 22.? , 23. Tyler Elkins
After an hour of action, the final five survivors were: Cameron Skyy, and Tommy Treznik (kudos to these two, the first two, for lasting all this time!), Ray Killbourne, Dragon Kreed, and Gavin Quade. Next out was Skyy, followed by Killbourne, and Treznik. Now it all came down to Kreed, and GQ--Gavin Quade.
In the end the wily Quade outmaneuvered his larger foe for the win, and the #1 contender's spot for the CLASH Championship!
Coming: November 6, Metro Pro Wrestling returns to Wyandotte with a special appearance by current Ring Of Honor ( ROH) Champion, Roderick Strong, managed by the ubiquitous Truth Martini.

Price Of Glory Repels VIP Invasion
September 12, 2010, the latest round in the battle between Coldwater, Michigan's POG promotion, and the invasion by Jamie P.'s VIP promotion ended with the home team holding the advantage. However, I'm pretty sure the game is still up for grabs.
In the first bout of the evening, Jack Verville put the Chaotic title on the line against Noah Lott. This was a battle between two crowd favorites. And the crowd was behind both. Noah picked up the win, and the Chaotic Championship, with a pin after foiling Verville's attempt at a Sunset Flip.
Next up, a new character, "Uncle Funky," a motivational specialist. His first task was to inspire a group of rookie jobbers towards confidence and success. This he did by giving them ball caps with the olympic logo, and medals. The trio then marched to the back.
The second bout pitted the "Pride of Defiance, Ohio," The SI who took on Magnum Conroy. Conroy had at least a 75 lb weight advantage. SI (rapidly becoming the Santino Marella of Michigan's scene!) did his usual comic routine--which the audience loved. However, Conroy finally caught him in an over-the-shoulder backbreaker that forced a quick submission. Conroy advances to the Glory Cup tournament.
Next up: a talk segment from Jimmy Shalwin accompanied by "Gameboy" Max Morrison, and Mike Musso, and Russ Jones. Shalwin then told the crowd that since POG had failed to join his followers. He, and his "Believers" were going to destroy the promotion!
First step in his apocalyptic vision: Musso, and Jones taking Uncle Funky's "special" team, Ninja Joe, and Brian (didn't catch his last name). This was hard to watch as Musso, and Jones totally dominated their opponents "Brian" suffered what appeared to be a legit injury to the neck. Afterwards Shalwin and company drew "X's" on the beaten team.
Last match before intermission was a triple threat match pitting Ryan Epic against Jake Omen against Omen's former partner Scotty Young. fast paced match won by Omen, who also advances to the Glory Cup Tourney.
After intermission the VIP team of Mr. Nifty and Jonny Lawless (accompanied by Jamie P,) challenged POG tag champs, Idol Heinze and Osyris. The VIP invaders got a few licks in, but Heinze and Osyris were simply too powerful and crushed their foes to retain the championships.
Next up: The Hype, Jimmy Shalwin squashed the outgunned last member of Uncle Funky's "special" team, winning with a series of power moves capped off by a crushing choke slam to mercifully end the one-sided affair.
The next scheduled match was Jamie Eternal vs Roderick Street. Street never came to the ring, and was counted out.
Time for the main event as Jamie P. led Joseph "The Hebrew Hammer" Schwartz, and Keith Creme (Team VIP) to the ring to face Dollar, and Sean Tyler (Team POG). This proved to be an exciting match with everyone getting in plenty of offense. In the end; however, POG champion Dollar pinned Joseph Schwartz for the win.
Tonight's battle went to POG. The war rages on!

VIP Wrestling Stages "Honor Bound II," In Henderson, MI
Under a radiant Michigan sky (alternating beteen sunny, and cloudy) VIP Wrestling under the guidance of owner/promoter Jamie P., staged a highly entertaining, outdoor event in Henderson, Michigan. The lot behind a tiny Methodist Church was the site for the free event, as neighbors, and fans from as far away as Toledo, gathered for the free event.
Action started about 5:15, under a sunny sky with the first of two "dark matches" (def.-a bout not part of the advertised card), as Mike Musso (listed as from Alaska)took on the "pride of Defiance, Ohio," The SI.
This was a lively match, raised a notch by SI's comic antics (foolishly engaging his larger foe in contests of strength, making boasts that betrayed him, etc.). In the end; however, SI had the last laugh as he rolled up Musso for the win (which of course, he then celebrated in an over the top style!).
The second dark match (as the clouds began to roll in) saw "The Caveman" (you can probably picture the wrestling garb)squaring off with Tyler Balkin. The caveman's bag of tricks proved to be an epoch, or two, out of date, as he fell victim to the modern wiles of his oppononent.
Now it was time for the official card. A six-man tag was first up, as Keith Creme, and Team H3RD (Austin Mannix and Tommy Treznik) took on the team of "The International Superstar," Marion Fontaine, Cameron Skyy, and "Mad Dragon." Kudos are due all six men for putting on a high energy, fast-paced contest that got the audience fully engaged, and set a standard for the rest of the card to measure up to.
After a spirited contest that saw all combatants have a chance to shine, Fontaine rolled up Mannix to garner the nod for the"good guys."
Next up was a Women's match pitting fast-rising new comer, Mena Libre, against the always tough Sybil Starr. The first surprise was when Starr (generally wrestles as a "face," or good guy) was introduced as from: "No place you could afford," came out snarling. The crowd responded with boos and insults.
Mena, by default the crowd favorite also played her role to the hilt in a contest that saw Sybil's superior mat-grappling and submission skills pitted against Mena's strength and skills. Although Sybil tortured her opponent with submission holds learned from her mentor, Dan "The Beast" Severn, in the end it was not enough. Give the win to Mina Libre.
This led to an interview segment featuring "Mild-Mannered Matt," interviewing the "Wrecking Ball," who appeared to be well north of the 300 pound mark! The interview was soon interrupted by "The SI," who challenged Wrecking Ball to a match. This, predictably enough proved to be a mistake. Wrecking Ball lived up to his name, as he quickly flattened the much smaller SI.
Next up was a Tag Title Match pitting Champions The Hollows (aka-The Painkillers) against the challenge of Jack Verville, and Mister Nifty. This was anoyher high flying affair as bodies flew over the top rope to gravelled surface below repeatedly, leaving one of the Hollows with a bad case of what bikers call "road rash." In the end the champs prevailed with a double tam maneuver to secure the win.
By this point, everyone was ready for an intermission to catch their breaths!
Second half opened with Jamie Eternal, "Michigan's Only Masked Monster," taking on Danyael, from the "Life Power Church." This seemed to be proceeding toward a predictable win for the powerful Jamie E. when a young woman who appeared to have wandered away from a rehearsal of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," came to ringside holding a wooden box that seemed to have some mystical hold on Mr. Eternal.
When it was opened Eternal froze in the ring, seemingly unable to move as Danyael unleashed his attack. Eventually Jamie got his hands on the box and destroyed it, then moved on to destroy Danyael for the win.
Next up,the feud between two former partners added another chapter as Sean Tyler took on Joseph "The Hebrew Hammer" Schwartz. This was another exciting affair as the former tag partners went all out in an effort to win. In the end Schwartz prevailed with a crushing clothesline, and a roll-up for the win.
Now as the sky was beginning to darken, it was time for the main event pitting the VIP Champion, Jake Omen, repesenting the "Life Power Church, against former Champ, Jimmy "The Hype" Shalwin in a "last Man Standing" match. Rules are match is won by the competitor standing when his opponent is unable to regain a standing position in time to beat a 10-count.
The issue was in doubt as both men, again fighting in and out of the ring, seemed poised to win. In the end, however, it was crowd favorite, Shalwin, gaining the win and the VIP Championship! Thus sending the appreciative crowd home in a happy mood.

Price Of Glory Card In Coldwater, MI features Epic Battles and Betrayals
August 1st, saw heated action at the Michigan Sports Camp, as titles were won, friends were betrayed, and new alliances formed that seem ready to change the face of independent wrestling in Michigan.
The action witnessed by about forty fans began with what was supposed to be a "fatal fourway" match for Noah Lott's Chaotic Championship belt. The three challengers: Mr. Nifty (from "Niftyville, of course), Jonny Lawless, and Jack Verville waited in the ring for the champ.
Lott came out in street clothes, and said that he was in an auto accident on Wednesday night, and was not cleared to wrestle. After some discussion, he was ordered to forfeit the title with the [rovision that he would get a shot at the title in October.
After some spirited action that saw the challengers form shifting alliances ( a sort of metaphor for what lay ahead this evening). Verville won the title, besting his rivals. Lott handed him the belt and they shook hands on the October bout.
Next up, Jamie P., owner of VIP Wrestling came out with Joseph Schwartz, and the Hrrd (tag team), and ominously announced "tonight it begins!"
In the second match of the night former friends and partners Ryan Epic, and Adam Buehler (who I think gets tired of "Ferris Buehler" allusions) squared off in a tag bout. Buehler enlisted the aid of Jake Omen, and Epic paired up with Scotty Young. It was another spirited contest, that featured plenty of doubleteaming by both
teams. Epic, and Young joined forces to deliver a "tower of doom" move on Buehler for the win.
Next up "The SI," from Defiance, Ohio, was announced as taking on Dan Severn, only rather than the Beast himself, this version of Dan Severn turned out to be an under five feet tall imposter wearing a cheesy handlebar mustache! At this point Roderick Street entered the ring and directed 'Dan" to the outside of the ring.
Street made quick work of the SI who was soon tapping furiously to signal his surrender to an ankle lock.
Next up the "show down" as VIP's team of the HRRRD, and "Jewish Hammer," Joseph Schwartz took on Price of Glory tag champs, Osiris and Idol Heinz, and their partner Sean Tyler. After several minutes of rugged action where the POG standard bearers seemed headed for certain victory, Joseph Schwartz rolled up Sean Tyler for a victory that left the crowd in stunned disbelief as we headed for intermission.
After the intermission, Dollar put his POG heavyweight title on the line against Michigan's "masked monster," Jamie Eternal. Eternal proved far and away much the more powerful of the two. However, Dollar"s superior ring generalship gained the champ a hard earned, and very popular victory.
Time for the main event, the Price Of Glory 30 man "Gauntlet" match ( two men start, and a new man enters the ring every minute, last man standing is the winner. "Bry-2-fly" and Jack Verville were the first two in the ring, soon joined by Ryan Epic.
After the dust cleared, and competitors came and went #27 was the very popular (and arguably the best technical wrestler in either promotion) Keith Creme. #28 in was Joseph Schwartz, #29 in was Sean Tyler, last in was jamie Eternal.
Tyler, "Game boy" Max Morrison, Jimmy "The Hype" Shalwin, and Jamie Eternal went out in that order, leaving POG "standard bearer " Keith Creme, to face VIP's representative, Joseph Schultz. As the two squared off Schwartz suddenly handed Creme a VIP lanyard and, in case anyone in the crowd failed to "get it." Schwartz and Jamie P. laughed and said "he went VIP!"
Schwartz then eliminated himself over the top rope, guaranteeing Creme the title shot against Dollar and leaving the crowd staring in stunned disbelief! Thus far Jamie P., and VIP are making mincemeat of Price of Glory. It is getting late in the game, and POG has a lot of ground to regain, and the clock is not in the home team's favor!

Carnage In Coldwater, As Chaos Reigns!
Three titles were on the line, as were pride and bragging rights, as Coldwater, Michigan's "Price Of Glory" promotion closed their sixth season with "Faded Glory 6."
It was a wild night, so let's get right to the action.
First match(part of the tournament for the Chaotic championship) saw the always capable Keith Creme take on Noah Lott. This was a scientific encounter that saw both competitors abide by the rules--a precedent ignored by the rest of the nights competitors. It started with a fine display of chain wrestling that saw both men move smoothly from hold to hold.
Noah Lott won finally with a version of a Facebuster, Lott and Creme shook hands. Lott advances and Creme exits the tournament.
Second bout, also part of the Chaotic Tournament, saw Mr. Nifty take on "Chill" Jack Verville. This one saw back and forth action, as Verville's technical prowess was offset by Nifty's rough tactics. Indeed, just when Verville was mounting a comeback, Mr. Nifty resorted to the dreaded "foriegn object," to chill Verville long enough for the three count. Nifty advances.
Next up was the "Hardcore Match" between Hardcore Harley, and Hardcore Harry. A disclaimer: I have to admit that I am not a fan of the hardcore genre--for too many reasons to go into here. Weapons ranging from a ballpeen hammer, and other assorted tools to a toilet seat were scattered about the ring. In a matter of minutes both men, and much of the ringside area were splattered with gore.
Finally (some would say mercifully) Harry whacked Harley with the toilet seat, draped it around his (Harley's)face and sat on it for the three count. It took fiteen minutes to clean up the blood and debris.
Next up was a tag match between "The House of Truth," Christian Able (recently from ROH) and Josh Raymond. Backstory was that POG champ, Jimmy Shalwin has been ducking Christian Able. Since the House of Truth couldn't get Shalwin, they settled for the "Believers," Mike Musso and Russ Jones, Shalwin's lackeys.
Able did a great job of firing up the crowd, but to no avail as Musso, used a "spear"--the maneuver, not an actual weapon, to gain the nod. Able was gracious in defeat, giving props to POG's strong roster, and then warned Shalwin: "it's not over between us!"
Next up was Noah Lott versus Mr. Nifty for the right to face Jonny Lawless for the vacant Chaotic Title. Lott won the match, but in the aftermath Nifty attacked Lott and attempted to injure his shouder!
Next up was interview segment that saw an over-the-top SI (Spencer Irvine) interview Mild Mannered Matt, and Mick Veasey, eventually attacking Veasey. Things looked really dark for Mick until...Frankie The Face ran in for the save and took on The SI in the next match. FTF made quick work of SI with a crossface submission.
Match number seven saw the so far winless Ryan Epic (lost to Sybil Starr in his last outing)take on his former tag partner, Adam Bueller. They started by teasing that Bueller was going to just "lay down" for Epic. Of course this broke down and the two settled into a "genuine" match with Ryan E. ultimatelt scoring the win.
Now it was time for intermission before the three big title bouts.
After the break it was time for the chaotic tile bout. POG owner, Johnny dynamo, came to the ring and announced that Noah Lott would be unable to wrestle so the chaotic title match would take place at the July show. Jonny Lawless demanded that he be immediately declared the champion by forfeit.
As Dynamo and Lawless went nose-to-nose, Noah Lott hobbled to the ring and said he was ready, despite his injured shoulder, to face Lawless. He proved he was ready by weathering Lawless' punishing offense, and nailed him with a sunset flip to win the chaotic title.
Next up was the tag title match between the seemingly unbeatable champs, the 400 plus pound Osyris and his partner the rugged Idol Heinze meeting the challenge of the former Kosher club partners, Joseph Schwartz, and Sean Tyler. This latter team was accompanied by VIP owner, Jamie P.
The crowd was divided, the champs are crowd favorites, and Schwartz and Tyler are likewise very popular. In truth things seemed to be going the champs way, when suddenly Jamie P.told Schwartz "lets get out of here."(or words to that effect) and the two left abandoning Tyler to the none too "tender mercies" of the champions. They quickly disposed of him and left the ring.
Schwartz, and Jamie P., quickly returned attacking Tyler and the ring announcer. Jamie P. launched into a tirade of recrimination over the way he had been treated when leaving POG, and he and Schwartz prepared to batter the out gunned announcer. Fortunately Osyris and Heinze rushed to make the timely save. Jamie P. vowed further retaliation as the newly minted heels fled.
This was a very effective heel turn in that no onr in the crowd saw it coming. It also sets up lots of future possibilities. Excellent booking.
Now the stage was set for the triple threat main event for the Price Of Glory championship. The match pitted champion Jimmy "The Hype" Shalwin against the top two challengers, the "masked monster" Jamie Eternal, and the much smaller Dollar. The three engaged in an intense contest until Dollar locked a cloverleaf submission on Shalwin, forcing him to tap out. The result has to be considered an upset, and Dollar may soon discover how "uneasy rests the head that wears the crown."
This concleded the evenings action, but laid the groundwork for for lots of future action. What more can a fan ask for?

Metro Pro Wrestling Presents Ten Bout Card in Wyandotte
MPW presented a three hour show at Wyandotte MI's ARC Hall on May 15th. A number of titles were in play, so lets get to it.
The card literally opened with a big match as two four hundred pound competitors saw action. Big Chuck took on the Mongolian Butcher. Big Chuck got the win when the Butcher was disqualified due to a run-in by Doomsday who attacked Chuck with a kendo stick.
Match number two saw "Gutter" take a win over Xavier Justice via a Boston Crab tap out.
In the third contest of the night "Sweet" Willie Wates (with "Lita Libra")using an effeminate ring persona took on Tommy Taznick (with Cameron Sky). All four got involved in the action, but Taznick picked up the win when Sky used a loaded forearm brace to ko "Sweet" Willie.
In the last match before the intermission, Andy Muscat took the measure of Mark Chojka with a frog splash and body press.
After the break, A "Tag Team Battle Royal" got things underway again. Frankly the action was a little hard to follow at points. Competitors included Johnny Scarbone, The Bumpin Uglies, DBA and Jason Platinum, Vinnie Scarbone, among others. I will have to list the winners later as I didn't catch their names.
Next up was the "Motor City Machine Gun," Mike Kelly defending the PWL TV championship against challenger "Doomsday." This was quite a brawl. Kelly picked up the win via dq due to interference by the Mongolian Butcher. This sets up a tag battle pitting Kelly and "Big Chuck" against "Doomsday" and the Butcher on the next card.
Match number seven saw Joseph Schwartz (The Hebrew Hammer) take on Nate Mattson. This match started with some comedic bits including an audience participation bit where crowd was asked to name famous Jewish wrestlers (Goldberg and Barry Horowitz were mentioned). These two talented performers put on a good match, but there was no crowd heat for this one, as Mattson picked up the win with a figure four leglock.
Mr. Nifty then took on Adam Reynolds (with "Game Boy" Max Morrison) the stipulation was that if Nifty won Reynolds would give him a title shot on the next MPW card. Nifty won with a roll up setting up the title match.
In the semi final contest NCWA Champion Jason Harris (aka the "Sharp Dressed Man")put the title on the line against Kevin Thorn. Harris started by cutting a heel promo that set up the opportunity for Thorn to rally support by declaring that the audience was his family, and he wouldn't let Harris get away with insulting his (KT) "family."
harris played the "chicken heel" to perfection running from the challenger, and fleeing th ring at any sign of danger. Harris was disqualified for sluggin Thorn with the NCWA belt. Thorn gained a measure of revenge by flattening the champion.
The main event pitted Eddie Venom against MPW champion Jaimy Coxx, in a "Table Match" The only way to win was to put your foe through a table. This was a wild affair that saw Venom bleed, and get put through a table! Unfortunately for the champion the referee was unconscious at this point and couldn't issue the decision. Venom and his manager cleared the ring of the broken table, and brought in another table.
Of course now the ref had revived and declared Venom victorious when he put Coxx through the second table! Can you say rematch?
Next MPW card is slated for July 10th.

WWA Holds Final Card Of The Season
May 9th's card at Somerset Hall in Toledo, will be last for a few months. Feuds were concluded, and the seeds were planted for future conflicts at tonight's event promoted by Dr. Jerry Graham, Jr. Now to the action.
First up: Halloween, a local favorite, took on Brandon Edwards. A few comedy spots to get things underway as Edwards efforts caused more pain to him than his elusive foe. This was followed by an exchange of chops which led into a fast paced exchange of holds. A couple of botched spots, which fortunately did not result in injury. Halloween used a "roll up" to pick up the win.
Next up was Denzell Titan, 1/2 of the tag champs, "The CIA," announced that his partner "Black Velvet" sufferred a broken leg in a match in Japan. Denzell took on the much larger Will Studd (former WWA champ) setting up a classic syrength vs. speed contest. Although Studd used his strength to dominate much of the action, speed won out as Titan used a version of the codebreaker, and a roll up to get the nod.
Third bout saw Brian Ziggler take "The New Age Patriot," Brian Castle. This one started a little slowly, as Ziggler spent a lot of time baiting the crowd for some cheap heat. Eventually Castle nailed a Russian Leg Sweep and cover for the win.
After a short intermission, Pastor Pain took on Sebastion Rose in a grudge match. Pain picked up the win when his former protege was disqualified, but this pairing could play out again in the future as nothing was really resolved.
Match number 5 demonstrated how audiences can alter the booking of a match. Dan Boone, who was booked as a face, took on the always heelish Crimson. For whatever reason, the crowd chose to back Crimson ( a Sting look-a-like) and rejected Boone's efforts to earn their support. Crimson picked up the win by forcing Boone to tap out to an arm lock.
The fall out came when Andy Chene came out to cut a promo on Crimson. The crowd booed Chene, a face, and cheered the heel Crimson! It will be interesting to see how this is booked when WWA returns in the Fall.
The sixth bout saw favorite "D-Ray 3,000" take on "the Sharp Dressed Man," Jason Harris, and "Pitt Bull" on a handicap match. This was actually a pretty good match as D-Ray weathered the onslaught of his opponents to eventually pin Pitt Bull.
Now it was time for the main event. Bobo Brazil, Jr.(seconded by Dr. Graham) defended the title against the 420 lb "Baba Tunde" (from the wilds of Mt Kilimanjaro)who was, as always, led to the ring wearing a hood, by Pastor Pain, and Jungle Jane.
Pain immediately whacked Dr. Graham with "the book," as Babatunde seized the early advantage with the dreaded "foriegn object." The action was in and out of the ring. Brazil gained control of the foriegn object and began to dominate the action in spite of Pain, and Jane's best (worst?) efforts to cheat on behalf of Babatunde.
At one point, all three seconds were in the ring, and Jungle Jane planted a kick into Graham's belly. As the ref forced Jane and Pain to leave the ring. Graham threw Babatunde's hood over the wild man's head, rendering him passive and helpless as Brazil polished him off with a head butt and pin.
In the ensuing melee, the furious heels attacked Graham and Brazil. In a bit that bypassed the '90s, the 80s, and the 70s, Jungle Jane, after trying to belt Graham with a chair, found herself pulled over his lap and spanked. The crowd of about a hundred was delighted.
Local fans can watch WWA Superstars on cable ch 69 at midnight, on saturdays, for future plans.

"Chaos In Coldwater"
It was a night of action, and surprises at the Price Of Glory show in Coldwater, MI, omn May 2. The regular videographer/soundman had car problems and couldnt make it, which meant more subdued entrances for this show.
The curtain raiser featured Mister Nifty (from "Niftyville," of course) taking on Sean Tyler. This featured fast paced back and forth action, with neither holding a clear advantage. Finally a frustrated Nifty, began tossing chairs into the ring, in the chaos that ensued, as various others got involved, including Tyler's tag partner, Joseph Schwartz.
While the ref was otherwise occupied, Nifty tossed a chair to Schwartz, and then fell to the mat with a groan, selling a chair shot that never happened. The ref seeing the apparently stricken Nifty, thrashing about on the mat, and Schwatz with a chair signalled a disqualification, awarding the match to Nifty (who also qualifies for June;s tournament for the chaotic cahampionship.
Up next was an intergender match betweeh winless (0 and 10) Ryan Epic, and the "first lady of POG," Sybil Starr. It wasn't much of a contest as the scintillating Sybil slapped her opponent during the introductions, low-blowed him as the match got underway, then polished him off with a crossface in about a minute and a half.
Next up was an interview segment featuring "moisture moment" Jack Veasey, and "Mild Mannered Matt interviewing Defiance, Ohio's own "The SI." You had to be there.
The third match saw Jonny Lawless and Noah Lott bring down, if not the house at leat the ring! During the action the middle rope fell loose! In the end Noah Lott prevailed with his finisher called, of course, "Noah's Arc."
Hard Core Harry then wandered out with a bag of tools for his match with Hardcore Harley. Only problem was that that bout is scheduled for June! Harry insisted that the ref declare him the winner, before he would leave,
next up Jamie P., a former POG commissioner led the "Hollow Souls" to the the ring to face a pair of masked opponents. The souls won, pinning "Pedrosis." Pedrosis then unmasked revealing--Ryan Epic! This was Epic's second loss of the night. On that note, it was time for intermission.
After the break, Joseph "Hebrew Hammer" Schwartz challenged Jimmy Shalwin, the POG champion (accompanied by Max Morrison). After Schwartz dominated the action, Shalwin gained the tainted win by spitting the tainted Kool Aid into Schwartz's eyes.
In the match of the night, Keith Creme, anf "Chill" Jack Verville, wnt to an old school, scientific draw. Creme proved t be a master tactician, and Verville no slouch. The crowd chanted for "five more minutes." The announcer declared that, rather than "five more minutes," both would advance to the chaotic tournament.
Next up: the Hollow Souls got their shot at tag champs, Idle Heinz, and Osiris. This proved the wisdom of the old saying: be careful what you ask for! The champs proved way too powerful for the souls who were pretty much squashed by the powerful champs.
It was noe time for the main event match pitting "Michigan's only Masked Monster," Jamie Eternal, against the popular "Dollar." This was a real "slobber knocker"--as Jim Ross would say, and ended with both being counted out. It took most of the locker room to keep these two apart. Champ Shalwin rejoiced "they both lost, so I get next month off!"
He was indignant when informed that rather having a bye for the next show, he would have to defend against both Dollar, and Eternal. That's right. On June 3rd, it will be a three-way match for the POG title. On that exciting note, the announcer thanked us all for coming, and a thoroughly happy crowd dispersed.

Cauliflower Alley Club's 45th Reunion is Spectacular, Part Two
OK, lets get the name dropping out of the way: Tiger Conway, Jr., Killer Karl Cox, Bob Geigel, The Sensational Destroyer, Dick Beyers, Don Leo Jonathon, Dean Higuchi, "Judo" Gene Lebell, Mil Mascaras, Earl Maynard, and oh so many more.
The big social events were the "Baloney Blowout," on Tuesday night (the name commemorates a time when wrestlers on the road would pool their change and buy bread and balogna to keep themselves fed between towns)and the major awards banquet on Wednesday night (April 21st).
On Tuesday, the first honoree, Irish Pat Barrett, was unable to overcome the volcanic ash cloud blanketing Europe, and the UK, and Ireland to appear to accept his award in person. His career lasted from 1960 to 1985, and covered the entire planet.
Vince Fahey, who runs the website "Kayfabe Memories" (www.kayfabememories.com )dedicated to preserving pro wrestling's storied history received the "Red Bastein Friendship" award for his work, and dedication to the sport, and CAC.
Lee Fields, longtime wrestler and Gulf Coast promoter, recieved a posthumous awrd in recognition of his long career. Also recieving a posthumous award was George "Scrap Iron" Johnson. George trained in the legendary "dungeon" of Stu Hart. An "enhancement worker," his work Ethic was legendary. George passed away in 1982. Members of his family were in Las Vegas to accept the award.
Joyce Grable, who had a twenty year ring career after being trained by Lillian "The Fabulous Moolah" Ellison, received the womens wrestling award. Also honored were Vance Nevada, Rip Hawk (originally from Toledo), Magic Shwartz, and Roger Kirby.
The major awards at the banquet were Dean Higuchi, who was introduced by the "Mormon Giant," Don Leo Jonathon. Dean was a legend in Hawaii, both as a wrestler and as a promoter.
A special moment for me, and especially for friend Sybil Starr, who was trained by him, was Dan "The Beast Severn receiving the "Lou Thesz Award," for his achievements in amateur, and professional wrestling as well as his feats in MMA. Dan barely made it from Europe in time to claim his prize. His acceptance speech, like the man himself, was low key, powerful, dignified, and inspiring.
Jim Ross, "Good Old JR" the best play-by-play announcer in wrestling history (IMHO), received a lifetime achievement award for his nearly 40 years in wrestling. His stories of the early days of his career were priceless, if unprintable here. He was introduced by another legend--"Stone Cold" Steve Austin.
The final award, the "Iron Mike" award, went to Ted DiBiase, the infamous "Million Dollar Man." Ted proved to be the total opposite of his gimmick; a humble, polite, and generous man who clearly had earned the love and respect of his peers. This included Harley Race, the tough as nails, seven time NWA champion, who wept as he recalled trying to save the life of Ted's Dad, "Iron Mike: Di Biase. Mike Dibiase died in a wrestling ring when Ted was nine years old. Terry Funk, took over for Race, and somehow they made it through a moving presentaion that I will not soon forget.
There you have it, one persons report. CAC was so much more than I had hoped for. I know that we will be back next year, and if you are a real wrestling fan, you will be too!

VIP Wrestling At Sienna Hieghts College
Sienna Hieghts Field House, in Adrian, Michigan was the setting for another night of exciting wrestling action tonight. The crowd was small, but enthusiastic, and had plenty to both cheer and boo. Let's get to the action:
Before the main card, a mini-tounament was held between candidates vying for the opportunity to appear on the next VIP card. Mike Musso beat Spencer Irvine, then lost to Jaden Andrews (think of a hefty white guy doing a Michael Jackson schtick, and you will have a picture of Andrews who bills himself as "the new king of pop"). So Andrews will appear on the next card.
The official opener saw Marion Fontaine take the measure of Roderick Stone with a moonsault off the top rope. This was a very entertaing match that got the crowd warmed up, and ready for more.
Next up was an interview segment with "Mild-Mannered Matt" interviewing Jake Omen, VIP Champ, and the members of the "Life Power Church." Things started to turn ugly, when Jake and company threatened MMM. Former champ, Jimmy Shalwin, Jamie Eternal("Michigan's only masked monster"), and Sean Tylerstein, and Joseph Schwartz made the save. When the dust had settled, the disputants had all agreed to an 8-man elimination tag match main event to settle the score.
Match number two saw Ryan Epic take on Jonny Lawless. Epic proved agile and athletic, but it was for naught as he fell victim to his much larger foe. The nod went to Lawless via a slam and press.
Next up was "Madd Dragon," vs Keith Creme. Creme took time out from his busy schedule to heckle me on his way to the ring. Creme proved much too capable for Madd Dragon, and picked up the win.
After an intermission Tag Champs Jack Verville, and Mr.Nifty successfully defend their belts against "Dixie Muscle." A back cracker and press won the match, but the chant of :"dixie chicks!" may have broken Dixie Muscle's will to win.
After the break, "Gutter" (with "Cindy"-- a length of down spout!) took on a masked foe whose name was not announced. This was won by "Gutter;" with a version of the "RKO."
Main event was the 8-man elimination tag. This was lively, with lots of action, first man out was Sean Tylerstein of Kosher Club, followed by regular partner Joseph "the Hebrew Hammer" Schultz. Next out both members of the "Hollow Souls," the Jamie Eternal, and then the next to last member of the heel team went. This left ex-champ Jimmie "The Hype" Shalwin in against current champ, Jake Omen. It was Shalwin picking up the win, pinning Omen with a roll-up. This ended the card but set the stage for a future title match between Omen, and Shalwin.

Cauliflower Alley Club's 45th Reunion is Spectacular, Part 1
The Gold Coast Casino in Las Vegas, NV was the site this past week (April 19-21) of a spectacular get together of legends of the sport. From 90 year old Ted Tourtas, who proved he can still handle a mike, to Amazing Kong, Cheerleader Melissa, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, "The Million Dollar Man," Ted Dibiase, and the best wrestling announcer of all time--JR, Jim Ross(in my humble opinion)
In the line to check into the hotel, I met a pro wrestler, long retired, who told me that he had "both hips replaced, lower spine fused, and several shoulder operations--but I would do it all again." That was a sentiment that was repeated by more than one grizzled mat veteran in the next three days.
I am not even going to try a linear report, instead, I am going to offer an impressionistic report. First day, Sally and I toured the exhibit hall met a father-son team of "lucha" style mask makers, the producer of a documentary on "The Sheik"(Edward Farhat), Howard Brody, the author of "Swimming With Piranhas: Surviving The Politics Of Professional Wrestling." I also got a photo of Sally with the Alaskan Tag Team Champions, and their title belts. We also met Al "Mr. Outrageous" Burke, wrestler, actor, and stuntman.
Others in the hall included Dave Maciejewski, (davem@communicor.com), with an enormous display of wrestling memorabilia. Dawn Marie, from ECW and WWE, now the head of the Wrestlers Rescue organization, Mad Dog Vachon, Tammy "Sunny" Sytch, Mil Mascaras, Dick "Destroyer" Beyer, Ted Dibiase, and many others.
We met up with Michigan woman wrstler, Sybil Starr, who kept things lively. The workshops offerred included one on the "Psychology of the Wrstling Fan" offered over two mornings by Dr. David M. Reiss of California. It was very informative and avoided being either too simplistic or too technical.
Ted Dibiase, and Harley Race presented a session called "Getting Heat," in one hour they covered more of the basic art of pro wrestling than you would expect to find in a much longer course. That is probably why they had an SRO audience of fans, indie promoters, and indie wrestlers.
Other workshops included one on planning for "Life After Wrestling." It covered such topics as staying on good terms with the IRS, and investing for the future. It included really down-to-earth, practical advice to help the new generation of grapplers from winding up like "Randy The Ram," (Mickey Rourke's character in the film, "The Wrestler").

Two Title Bouts Headline WWA Superstars In Toledo
April 11, and Somerset Hall was the venue for another card of wrestling from the
1980's. If you liked that era of pro wrestling, this was the card for you. If you didn't like that style--not so much. A crowd of about 100, mostly faithful regulars, was on hand for the festivities. Now to the action.
First bout saw crowd favorite Halloween take on Pitt Bull (the fans chanted "Poodle" at him). This match served mainly as a warm-up, but the crowd popped big when halloween nailed his foe with a spear for the win! This in spite of interference by "The Sharped Dressed Man," Jason Harris, who announced that he was taking on Pitt Bull as his protege (ala "NXT?").
In an interview segment, Tag Champs, The CIA (Denzell Titan & Black Velvet)announced that they would be touring Japan, and thanked the fans for their support. No one, I suspect, was caught unawares by the run-in by Pastor Pain, and his cohort, except for the CIA! They delivered a beatdown on both of the champs. The culmination saw Titan slammed through a table. It took two tries to accomplish!
The second match of the night saw Brandon Edward delivered into the hands of Babatunde, the 435 lb clone of Kamala. Edwards proved no match for his much larger foe, and was quickly disposed of! Babatunde then went on a rampage pinning "Jungle Jane," one of his handlers in a corner. Much of the roster came to Jane's aid, only to be disposed of by Babatunde!
Bobo Brazil, Jr. finally made the successful save, and cleared the ring so match number 3 could get under way. Anothe local favorite, Bryan Castle--The New Age Patriot took on The Ripper who, needless to say was from "parts unknown." Highlight of this match was a dropkick by the nearly 300 lb Castle, who went to win with a Russian leg sweep.
Last bout before intermission was CIA defending the tag title against the Kentucky Wrecking Crew. Black Velvet was the only member of his team at the start of the contest. Pastor Pain, and his partner attacked their outnumbered foe with utter ferocity, and seemed headed to certain victory, until a heavily bandaged Denzell made his appearance. The champs made the heroic comeback, much to the partisan crowd's delight, and escaped with the win.
After intermission, Andy Chene took on his former partner, Crimsom. It was a wild match filled with brawling in and out of the ring. At one point Crimsom spewed a red mist into Chene's face and the two continued their brawl. After a couple of minutes the announcer declared that Crimsom had been disqualified? A very strange finish! Don't know if someone's timing was off or what?
Next up was what proved to be the best match of the night! Jason Harris, AKA, the "Sharp Dressed Man," vs D-Ray 3000. This was a classic example of storytelling at its in-ring best! Action went back and forth until D-ray nailed the win with a brain-buster. Pitt Bull then entered the ring and, with his new mentor delivered a beatdown to D-Ray. These two deserve a push, and a good feud is the proper vehicle for that push.
Main Event was another in a series of wierd stipulation title bouts. This time it was a "wave the flag to surrender" match. Match could only be won by one of the combatants seconds waving a white flag (presumably to save his man from further damage). Bobo Brazil,Jr., the Champ, was seconded by Dr. Jerry Graham, Jr. Challenger Sebastian Rose was seconded by the ubiquitous Pastor Pain.
Brazil won when Pain attempted to hit him with the flag, prompting the referee to declare: "you waved the flag!" a furious Pain called for Babatumbe to come to the ring and attack Brazil. The two (Brazil and Babatumbe) then battled all the way back to the dressing room! The two will meet again on May 9, at the next event.
The good: Jason Harris and D-Ray 3000.
The bad: misscues
The ugly: Wierd stipulations, and wierd finish in the main event. Brazil and Rose can put on an entertaining match without this nonsense. Fans who pay to see these shows deserve clean finishes.

Wrestlemania XXVI--Part 2
Match number 6, was the "no holds barred" grudge match between Bret Hart, and Vince McMahon as they worked to lay the bitter feelings from the infamous Montreal "screw job' to rest. Given that Vince is now 64, and Bret suffered a stroke a few years ago, I wasn't expecting a classic--and it wasn't.
After an initial swerve when Vince claimed to have hired the Hart family to aid him--only to discover that they were solidly behind Bret, the actual "match" soon settled into a beatdown of Vince that went on way too long! I found the only feeling I had was a wish for it to be over. Mercifully, Vince finally tapped out to a sharpshooter, ending his, and the viewers pain.
Chris Jericho and Edge were up next, Jericho successfully defended his World title getting a clean victory with a "codebreaker" and press. Some will be disappointed that Edge didn't get the nod, but frankly, Jericho is the hottest heel in WWE, so it makes sense to prolong Edge's chase for now.
Match no. 8 was the ten Woman Divas' tag battle, with the heel team being led by Vicky Guerrero. This match, which was mostly played for laughs, served to lower the crowd heat before the two main events. The heels won with Vicky being assisted by her partners in deivering a "frog splash" to Kelly Kelly (it took two tries) Match was ok for what it was, and will give ten women a Wrestlemania payday.
In the first main event, John Cena took on his arch nemesis, Batista in a pier six brawl. The action took place in and out of the ring, with numerous near falls, and believable close calls. In the end, Cena got his revenge, forcing Batista to tap out to an stf. My hunch at this point was that Michaels was going to lose (a "feel good" moment in the Cena match to help offset what was coming next!).
Finally the match that everyone was waiting for, Shawn Michaels putting his career on the line, against the Undertaker's 17 win streak at Wrestlemania. The match did not dissapoint. It was a near perfect example of Booking 101: create a conflict between two wrestlers that people will care about, with characters, and a backstory, and then let the wrestlers "tell" a compelling story in the ring.
Both wrestlers let it all hang out, by the end I was totally "marking" out! These two put on a clinic that other wrestlers should study carefully. The high spots added to the meaning and intensity of the story. The issue remained in doubt right until the end.
Finally, the Undertaker nailed Michaels with a tombstone piledriver, only to have Michaels kick out at the last second! After both men struggled to their feet, Michaels drew his finger across his throat, and slapped his foe in the face! An enraged Undertaker delivered another tombstone, and I think everyone knew there would be no escape this time. And there wasn't.
After the final pin Undertaker helped his beaten opponent to his feet and the two embraced in a genuine moment of emotion. The crowd cheered both, but especially Shawn, as, with tears flowing freely, he made his way to the back, probably for the last time as an in-ring performer. But, oh my, what a swan song!
Wrestlemania XXVII will take place in Atlanta, Georgia.

Wrestlemania XXVI: Shawn Michaels Career Ends (pt 1)
More than 72,000 watched as the show opened with a pyrotechnic display, and a highly ornamented rendition of "America The Beautiful," by Fantasia.
First up was R-Truth and John Morrison vs Miz and Big Show for the latter teams tag titles. In a short (under five minutes)match, the champs prevailed as Show KO'd Morrison for the win.
Next was the "triple Threat" match pitting Randy Orton against his proteges, Ted Dibiase, and Cody Rhodes. main purpose of this one was to further Orton's face turn. The "proteges" attacked Orton like ravenous wolves, but he overcame the odds, pinning Dibiase after hitting his RKO.
Third match was the ladder match for the Money In The Bank, title shot. The ten combatants were: Shelton Benjamin, Christian,Evan Bourne, Drew McEntyre, Dolph Ziggler, Kane, Matt Hardy, and Jack Swagger. In a mild surprize, Swagger grabbed the briefcase. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the months ahead!
Next up was triple H against The Celtic Warrior--Sheamus. This was a solid match demonstrating that Sheamus can deliver a solid performance. Even though Trips won the contest with gis signature move, the "pedigree."
In a match I was looking forward to, Rey Mysterio beat CM Punk with a 6-1-9. I was disappointed only in that I thought it would have been interesting to see Rey foeced to join Punk's straight edge society.

The "Human Orchid!" "The Toast Of The Coast," Gorgeous George Inducted Into WWE Hall Of Fame!
Moments ago (as I write this) Gorgeous George, one of the true creators of the modern Pro Wrestling landscape, was inducted by ex-wife Betty Wagner into the WWE HOF. The first wrestling match I ever saw, back when I was only recently graduated from wearing diapers, was George vs an opponent (I don't remember his name).
Even at that early age, the Gorgeous One, preceded by Betty who sprayed the ring with perfumed water, tossing "Georgie Pins" to the women in the crowd who scrambled to get them, wearing robes that looked more like something my Mother, rather than my father would wear, made an unforgettable impression on my young mind.
He challenged sexual stereotypes, as well as cultural values, and marketing techniques. Wife Betty, who played the role of his valet, richly deserved her moment in the spotlight. She not only sewed his costumes, she was the originator of many of his angles. Unfortunately, as so many entertainers have, George found the pressures of fame and celebrity more than he could bear without the aid of alcohol, and other vices.
In the end those pressures destoyed his marriage, consumed his fortune, and led to his death at the all too early age of forty-eight. There is a legend that when we die, and stand before the throne of judgment, our Guardian Angel will lean over the Book of our deeds, and surreptiously erase the record of our failings.
I would like to believe that whether a Guardian Angel, or the passage of enough time, the fall from grace that took George Wagner from the heights to a lonely death in a Hollywood flophouse, has faded and we can at last appreciate the genius of this wrestling pioneer.

Price of Glory's New Owner Revealed!
Coldwater, Michigan was once again the site for an exciting night of independent professional wrestling on March 21, at the Michigan Sports Camp.
Match #1) Noah Lott, accompnied by Tag partner Dollar, faced Idol Heinze, 1/2 of the current Tag Champions. This was a good warm-up match:Heinze's heel tactics got the crowd of fifty engaged, and aroused.
Lott beat his foe, after some torment, with a dropkick, and DDT combination.
next up was winless (in POG) Ryan Epic vs the much heavier Jonny Lawless, who proved that size does matter by using a cradle suplex to keep Epic's streak going. The Ring announcer then said the new owner would now come out to address the fans.
The crowd erupted in boos when Jimmy "The Hype" Shalwin, and his "Believers" came out! That however proved to be a red herring, the new owner proved to be:(drum roll please!) Johnny Dynamo, one of the original stars of the promotion. He asked all the wrestlers to come out of the locker room for some announcements.
After talking about his intention to restore POG to glory, he got down to specifics.
First off, he changed the main event to a six man tag match pitting Shalwin, Musso, and forced convert Louis Linden would face Jack Verville, Dollar, and the Beast himself: Dan Severn. he also added the stipulation that if either POG champ Jimmy Shalwin, or new (thanks to Shalwin forcing "believer" Max Morrison to hand over the belt)chaotic champ--Louis Linden were pinned, or submitted, in the match, the title would go to the wrestler scoring the win.
As you might expect, this did not sit well with the Shalwin Camp! In another move, Dynamo told Epic that he had to win a match soon or be ejected from POG!
This "talk" segment went on a little too long for my taste, but the fans did not seem to mind. It did set up some story lines, and provide a little backstory, and those were positives!
Next up, Jamie Eternal faced "Bry 2 Fly" who claimed to be one of the Backstreet Boys(no) who started by singing one of his "hits." This was a performance in the style of WWE's Jillian Hall. It was mercifully cut short be Eternal, who squashed him rather quickly.
Mike Musso then came to the ring to try his luck against "Michigan's only masked monster." He fared better than his singing predcessor, but in the end, Eternal proved too much for him, picking up the nod with a cradle pin. Now came intermission.
After the break, Hardcore Harry faced Mister Nifty in a spirited match. Harry picked up the win with a back slide.
Next was SI, from Defiance, Ohio, squaring off with Sean Tyler. Tyler gained the win with a cobra sleeper/camel clutch (RIP Eddie Farhat).
Now it was time for the main event, and my first chance to see Dan Severn in some time!
All six men saw action, eventually Severn chased Max Morrison to the back. "Chill" Jack Verville eventually scored the win over Louis Linden to gain the Chaotic Title!
The fans were delighted, but I have a hunch this controversial match didn't resolve any issues, and more surprizes lie ahead!
Congratulations to Dan Severn, who is being honored with the "Lou Thesz Award" at the Cauliflwer Alley Club's 60th convention in Las Vegas, in April! This is an awrd given to an individual who has distinguished himself in amateur, and professional, wrestling (in Severn's case, mixed martial arts as well). It is a richly deserved honor for a true superstar!

Ring Of Honor Show Dazzles Dearborn
March 19, found ROH putting on a show in the same building (Ford Community and Performing Arts Building), and at the same time as the Dearborn Symphony was holding it's Spring Concert. which is why my wife and I got a somewhat dazed look from a well coiffed woman when we asked "is this the line for Ring of Honor?" After recovering, she directed us to the right line just down the hall.
Once inside the proper venue, we saw the Bravado brothers celebrating a win in a dark match (definition:a match, or matches, held before the start of the 'official' card.) In the next dark match Bobbey Dempsey defeated Eddie Venom. Dempsey won with a fireman's carry turned into a variant of a piledriver.
A spokesman from Fight network came out and told us that were filming the show, and encouraged the crowd to "get rowdy!" That was a little like asking a roomful of nuns to pray--unneccessary. The crowd of about 1,000 was already redhot, and ready for some excitement, pounding on the barriers and chanting "R-O-H"
Rhett Titus squared off against "Skull Crusher" Rashe Brown, after an exchange of chest chops, Titus went into his bump-and-grind routine. The crowd began chanting "you're a virgin!" at him. This was followed by chants of "hep-a-ti-tis," which further enraged Rhett. But to no avail, as he was disposed of handily by the powerful Brown with an over the shoulders back breaker/face buster combination.
Next up: Tyson Dux vs Kenny King, although King was the heel, he had his fair share of the crowd's backing. They were delighted when he used a handful of tights to get the win. By this time the crowd was chanting and counter chanting at almost everything.
Kevin Steen & Steve Corino faced Player Dos and Pee Wee next. Dos was hurled from the ring who then subjected Pee Wee to an extended beatdown before Dos recovered enough to rescue him. The match was an extended series of high spots, and extended action, culminating in victory for Steen and Corino, when Steen used a cradle pile driver to finish off the unfortunate Pee Wee.
Last match of first half was former champ, Austin Aries against former TNA star Petey Williams. The crowd was evenly split between the two. Aries went for the cheap heat by calling us all a bunch of losers who had cashed in bottles and cans to get enough money to buy our tickets. The crowd answered back with a chant of "wheres your title?" at him.
Williams was greeted with "you got fired!" from the crowd alluding to his departure from TNA. The action itself was spirited, with lots of near falls, and high spots, and then seemed to fall apart somewhat. It felt like the combatants got confused momentarily about how it all was supposed to end. then they got it back together and Austin got the win.
After the break, Colt Cabana and El Generico took on "The House of Truth." For some reason, Cabana decided to heckle my wife, calling her grandma, and then called me grandpa (possibly because we were older than 90% of the crowd!)when the heels tried to join in Cabana and Generico blasted them. The match itself featured lots of low brow comedy, which helped lower the level of intensity in the house. Cabana's team picked up the win and he came over to us and hugged Sally.
next up was a classic "scientific" match up between Kenny Omega and Roderick Strong, that included some first rate (and increasingly rare) mat work. It was a lot of fun to watch, and was filled with believable near falls, and kept the issue of winner in doubt until the end, when Strong got the pin.
The main event which pitted The American Wolves, and Chris Hero, against the Tag Champions, the Briscoe brothers, and World champion Tyler Black, was simply the best tag match I have ever seen. It lasted over thirty minutes and drew repeated chants of "this is awesome!" from the crowd. The action was spectacular both in and out of the ring.
When tthe Briscoes and Black finally scored the win, the crowd was both hoarse, and emotionally spent!

Ring Of Honor returns to Dearborn in November.

Gorgeous George To Be Inducted Into WWE Hall of Fame
Pro Wrestling Torch reported today that Gorgeous George (Wagner) will be inducted in to the WWE Hall of Fame during Wrestlemania week events. This is overdue recognition for one of pro-wrestling's most important figures.
George revolutionized the sport with his marcelled hair and gender bending persona. Coming along with the rise of television, he transformed a sport that took itself much too seriously into sports entertainment.
Along the way he made (and lost) a fortune. He fell prey to his own demons. The saddest image in wrestling may be that of an ill, broke, and dispirited Gorgeous George sitting on a stool as his signature locks were shaved away.
It was 1962 in Los Angeles, and George had lost a "hair vs mask" match with the "Destroyer," (Dick Beyer under the mask). A few weeks later George would be dead, in a flophouse. His story faded into obscurity until the publication of a biography last year.
Now he will have his moment of triumph. I would like to believe that the burly, blond wrestler who had women scrambling to get one of his "Georgy Pins," is tossing a few to the angels applauding his long delayed moment of triumph.

TLC Fatal Fourway Tag Battle steals the Show In Adrian!
Sunday, March 14, saw another exciting card presented at Adrian's Hope Center. About forty fans witnessed the following action:
Before the main card two dark matches were presented. First up was a Battle Royal, featuring: Matt Dragon vs Noah Lott vs Black Magic vs Jay taylor vs mel Zero. Taylor won.
Second dark match saw "The Prince of Pop," david Andrew beat A. J. Puente witj a "Butt bomb" off the second rope.
Main Show opened with Danyael vs Marion Fontaine, Fontaine won with a flying body press.
Next up: Mild mannered Matt interviewed "Team Reckless." They began to threaten Matt, when, suddenly Onyx made the save. he then took Team Reckless on in a handcap match. This was total squash. Onyx crushed both opponents in about three minutes.
Third bout was highlight of the night--the "Fatal fourway, Tables/Ladders/and Chairs match" for the newly minted Tag Title belts. The Hollow souls vs Kosher club vs Dixie Muscle vs Jack Verville & Mister Nifty. This was a wild and wooly affair with action in the ring, and all over the ringside area.
By the time it was all over four tables had been smashed; severl chairs broken, two ladders were brought into the action as weapons, and also to reach the belts suspended over the ring, and Jack Verville was a bloody mess! He also, with parner Nifty, was a new tag team Champion.
After intermission"
Keith Creme (with Maximillion Morrison) defeated "Gutter" (with Cindy-a length of down spout) Creme won with a body press.
Jeff Brooks, 2009 Michigan wrestler of the year, took on Lennox Lightfoot, ultimately winning with a spinning neckbreaker.
In the main event, VIP Champ, Jimmy "The Hype" Shalwin put his title on the line against Michigan's masked monster: Jamie Eternal, and the leader of the Life Power Church--Jake Omen, in a "Triple Threat match.
Of course, Omen's allies the "Hollow Souls" attempted to interfere. They were quickly driven off by Shalwin, and Eternal, and a spirited contest ensued after both Shalwin, and, Eternal whomped Omen. But the heelish Omen had the last laugh, winning the title due to interference by Dollar who slipped him the title belt which he promptly used to flatten Shalwin and pick up the win and the title.
Ending was kind of flat. Heels should have been celebrating and gloating, but instead just slunk off.
No date was anounced for next show.

WWA Card in Toledo Features Three Title bouts
It was a night of title bouts, on March 7 at Somerset Hall in Toledo, Ohio as 125, or so, fans were treated to a njght of action. Not all of it was satisfying. The night began with Manua Soya, defending the "Pacific Rim" title against challenger Phil Atlas. After a slow start, the two put on a lively match featuring solid aerial work by Atlas, and power moves by the champion, who took the win with a devastating suplex and press.
Match number two was a handicap bout pitting Robbie Rotten and Brandon Edward against the 420lb Baba Toombe, who was led to the ring by "Jungle Jane." Pator Pain, and Buck Lawless. Baba, a new version of Kamala, The Ugandan Giant (of WWF, and Memphis fame in the '80's) made short work of his foes. he made a bloody mess of Robbie rotten in the process!
Next up was a "challenge match": Boomer, the regularly featured interviewer, who was flattened by Pain on the last card, got a bout with his 100 lb heavier nemesis, with a special stipulation: Pain wrestled with one hand tied behind his back.
In spite of interfernce by Buck Lawless, Boomer won with a version of the "brain buster." There wss a glitch, the cord holding the Pastor's hand behind his back broke, requiring Pain to hold his hand behind his back (rven though half of the crowd was aware that the cord was broken. None-the-less, the fans went to the intermission in a happy mood.
Second half of the show started with Tag Champs, Andy Chene and Crimson defending against Toledo's own CIA (Denzel Titan and Black Velvet, with Mgr Rick Sticks). The champs were accompanied by Dr. Graham who once again seemed shocked when Crimson resorted to "dirty" tactics! The CIA regained their titles when one of the CIA hit a code Breaker for the victory.
In the chaotic aftermath Chene, and Crimson engaged in a wild brawl, and Graham was knocked to the mat. More is sure to follow on future cards!
In bout number five, the popular "D-Ray 3,000" faced Buck Lawless(with Pastor Pain). The pair had a spirited match, won by Lawless when "The Sharp Dressed Man" interfered on Lawless' behalf. It was kind of hard to follow the in-ring action as Pastor Pain's over the top interaction with the fans drew focus away from the action.
The main event was a title defense by Bobo Brazil, Jr. against Sebastian Rose (with the ubiquitous Pator Pain) in a "street fight" match in street clothes. Whoever stripped his opponent down to his wrestling trunks first, would gain the nod!
After various bits of chicanery by all participants, Brazil stripped his foe down to his trunks for the win. Let me be blunt--I hated this match! When WWE puts its Divas in bouts like this I feel embarrassed for them! To put a title on the line in such a silly event takes away that title's credibility.
At best it should have been a non-title bout buried in the middle of the card. Every promotion is entitled to a miscue. Now and then. Lets hope Graham and his cohorts learn from this (in my opinion) mistake.
Next show: April 11.

Price of Glory Card Rocks Coldwater!
An enthusias himtic crowd of 50 fans were treated to a wild night of action at The Michigan Sports Camp presntation of "Moment of Truth. The evening featured a four man "chaotic tournament," and a title defense by P.O.G. champ, Jimmy "The Hype" Shalwin.
The opener featured Louis Linden squaring off against Mr. Nifty, who was accompanied by "The Believers," Mike Musso, and Russ Jones. After ten minutes of spirited action, Linden won with a Moonsault and Press, but that wasn't the end! All three of the heels confronted Linden and tried to recruit him to join the "Believers."
He declined to "drink the Koolaid,"--I'm not using a metaphor! Mr. Nifty and his associates had a jar of Koolaid.
Next up was the first match of the Chaotic Tournament, Jack "Chill" Verville, faced Jonny Lawless in a "submissions count anywhere" match. After spirited action, in and out of the ring, Verville gained the nod by forcing Lawless to tap-out with a choke.
Before the next bout Hardcore Harry, the Chaotic Champion, was interviewed and asked whether he would accept the challenge of "Hardcore Harley." He quickly agreed to a match on the next P.O.G. card.
The 3rd bout of the evening saw A. J. "Pace" Picante face Sean Tyler( I think that was his name, I couldn't quite catch it over the crowd noise!)Tyler won, but both men stayed in character, told a story, and got the crowd involved!
Last match of the first half of the show was match number two of the Chaotic Tourney. Champion Hardcore Harry lost his title to Max "Gameboy" Morrison in a Hardcore match after "The Believers" forced him to drink the Koolaid (seriously).
After the intermission, $Dollar$, and Noah Lott faced off against "The Believers," in a "Number One Contenders Match." Dollar and Lott won with a "Noah's Arc, and a moonsault and body press by dollar. Both Musso, and Jones of The Believers got in plenty of offense in a losing effort.
In the final bout of the Chaotic Tourny, Morrison defeated Jack verville in a "Power Glove" match, in which the glove played no role at all! Though the Koolaid once again did.
In a very good face vs face match, Keith Creme won over Ryan Epic in an "old school" scientific match which featured lots of chain wrestling.
The main event saw Jimmy "The Hype" Shalwin put the P.O.G. title on the line against Jamie Eternal. Shalwin was, of course, accompanied to the ring by the "Belivers," who were soon ordered to the back by the referee.
The match itself was a kind of plodding affair (or as my wife described it: a "bitch slap" contest!). Shalwin's comedic touch helped, but the styles of these two did not make for much excitement. Max Morrison snuck the Koolaid to Shalwin, who spewed some into Eternal's face, but apparently swallowed some himself, as he collapsed outside the ring. This gave Eternal the win--but not the title! Anybody besides me see a rematch coming up?
Next P.O.G. Card: March 21st "Resurection"

Ida Mae Martinez Passes
Ida was featured in the award winning documentary about Women's Wrestling, "Lipstick and Dynamite." Ida (real name Ida Selenkow) passed away last week. After her wrestling career she went on to become a nurse, and wrote about her experiences treating HIV-Aids patients in the early days of the epidemic.
As the documentary pointed out, she had a third career as a yodeler. Along with the other women featured: Penny Banner, Gladys "Killem" Gillem, The Fabulous Moolah, Mae Young, and Ella waldeck, Ida Mae helped shape the sport of Womens Wrestling.
She was buried on an Orthodox Jewish funeral on January 20th, in Pikesville, Maryland. May she rest in peace.

Night Of Surprises At VIP in Adrian!
The action got started even before the scheduled 7 PM start time with two extra bouts. In the opener, The Good Chris from Chicago defeated Cleveland product Mike Musso. There was quite a lot of action, as heel, Musso targeted his opponent's back. After some back and forth action, Chris won with a "roll-up" in a rather abrupt ending.
Second match brought the first surprise of the night as Jake Omen brought a new team "The Hollow Souls." Omen announced that they had joined his "Life Power Church." Looks like a new heel faction is being rolled out tonight.
Their opponents were Nick Zero, and Black Magic. This match was way better than I expected! Filled with innovative moves, and high spots. "Hollow Souls" used a double Missile Dropkick to pick up the win, but both teams were exciting to watch.
Next up was "Dollar," accompanied by Omen, and the Hollow souls, he revealed that he was now a member of the Life Power church. The foe was an African American wrestler called "TD."
With the aid of the rest of the Life Power Church, Dollar won handily, then Omen cut a promo
for Life Power.
After finishing his speech, he faced "superstar" Marion Fontaine. This was another good bout, as Jake had lots of heat with the crowd. The action included a spectacular dive through the ropes by Fontaine, that took out Omen and the hollow souls! Fontaine seemed poised to win with a super kick, but interference by the Hollow Souls led to Jake Omen getting the nod.
Jamie P., President of VIP, came to the ring carrying a small case which he opened to reveal a pair of title belts to be awarded to the winning team in a "Fatal Fourway" matchup at the next VIP card on March 13th. He also announced that the Hollow Souls, by virtue of their win, were already in the match. He further announed that the bout would be a "Tables, Ladders, and Chairs" match.
In the last match before intermission, the "Kosher Club" won over Jamie Andrews, and his partner (whose name I didn't catch). This was largely a comedy match, but Kosher Club (Joseph Schwartz and Sean Tylerstein) got serious long enough to win!
After the break, "Dixie Muscle" (Moonshine Mason and Johnny Rebel) defeated local favorites Jack Verville, and Mister Nifty, in a good but formulaic bout.
Next up Johnny Wallace defeated an opponent from Florida (whatever happened to Programs!)
in a pretty bland match/
Main event pitted Jimmy "The Hype" Shalwin, defending his title against Jamie Eternal. Frankly, two big men make for a slow match. The intervention of Jake Omen, and his clique, added needed energy to the bout. Omen was trying to convince Jamie Eternal to join the Life Power Church. When Jamie rejected the offer, Omen left. When the referee was knocked out by an accidental kick, the entire "Life Power" clique attacked both Shalwin and Eternal.
The rest of the locker room swarmed out to rescue Shalwin and Eternal, and a wild fracas ensued. The bout itself was declared "no contest."
The Good: I love the heel faction. They provide a context for involving audiences in caring for what happens from show-to-show. A good heel (and Omen is a good heel) brings out the best in the competition.
The Bad: Having said why I liked them, I have to also suggest that all the members of Life Power Church need to be careful not to overshadow the in-ring action. During Omen's bout, The Hollow Souls antics were so over the top that the audience attention was pulled awy from the match itself--not a good thing.
The Ugly: The inconclusive end to the main event--fans pay to see winners and losers!
Final Verdict: VIP is getting better, don't drive away the audience with "Dusty Finshes."*
*Dusty finishes get the name from Dusty Rhodes who, as a Booker, was notorious for ending main events with double dq's, double count outs, and other non finishes.

Glossary of terms
For the reader new to professional wrestling, I am developing a glossary of terms to make my posts easier to follow. I will add new terms as I think of them--or someone asks!
Blading--when a wrestler uses something (usually a piece a razor blade) to produce a cut on his own head, or his opponent.
Catch wrestling--American style of wrestling that emerged in carnivals in the nineteenth century and evolved into the modern professional style.
Chair shot--when one competitor strikes another in the head with a chair. Direct blows to the head have become popular with the rise of "hard core" style wrestling. Now, as evidence amounts of the long term effects, the industry is beginning to look for ways to move away from this gimmick.
Count-out--match ends with one or both wrestlers unable to return to ring within allotted time.
DQ--disqualification.
Draw--results when no competitor is able to score a fall within time limit.
Face--the apparent good guy in a wrestling match.
Heat--the emotion a skilled performer can produce from the audience during a match, or interview.
Heel--the apparent bad guy in a wrestling match.
Lucha--Mexican style of pro wrestling. Acrobatic moves, and maxked competitors are featured.
Potato--a blow that actually lands with full force. Usually because of crossed signals, or botched timing.
Selling--When a wrestler reacts to opponent's offense in a realistic, and convincing, manner.
Shoot--a match where one, or both, competitors are genuinely trying to win. These are extremely rare.
Shooter--a genuine wrestler, often used by promoters to control other wrestlers behavior.
Show air--when a wrestler obviously misses the opponent with a blow, often compounded when the target reacts as though he, or she, had been shot.
Swerve--when a "shocking turn" takes place, e.g. one partner turns on another.
Work--match (pretty much all pro matches) where finish is predetermined. Competition is to achieve a level of believability that allows audience to suspend their disbelief.
Worker-wrestler skilled at generating audience emotion.
Working "Stiff"--a style of pro wrestling wherein, even though the end is agreed upon, blows, and holds are applied with true force.

Monday Night War
Well January 4 was, as hype so often puts it, an historic night for professional wrestling. From the opening to the closing TNA served notice to WWE that WWE is no longer the "only dog in the hunt!" Owner Dixie Carter and new partners, Hulk Hogan, and Eric Bischoff pulled out all the stops to put on what was at times an extraordinary event.
Which is not to say that there weren't ugly moments as well, and I'll get to them in a moment. However, there is no denying that TNA generated more excitement than Monday night Wrestling has offered since WCW's demise took the pressure of competition off of Vincent Kennedy McMahon, and WWE.
Oh, one should note that WWE had its own drama on display as well. Bret Hart, as promised, returned after a twelve year absence (for reasons noted in previous blog), and in a moment of genuine emotion, buried the hatchet with Sean Michaels. Other than that it was business as usual: a two minute Womens match, a developing storyline involving Randy Orton, and his acolytes., and lots of business as usual.
Back to TNA. What was good:
The match between Kurt Angle and A. J. Styles was outstanding! A 22 minute clinic on how to work in the ring. Although I can't help but wince every time angle takes a bump--given his history of neck injuries!
The Womens tag match between Awesome Kong and Hamada taking on champs Sarita, and Taylor Wilde. They were given time to show what they could do--and they did! cograts to all four women, but especially to Kong and Hamada who won.
What was bad:
Too many WCW stars, at times it was like a step back to the 90's WCW, and that is not a happy memory! Scott Hall, Sean Waltman, The Nasty Boys, guys your fifteen minutes were up ten years ago!
There were some fumbles in continuity: Hogan dressing down Jeff Jarrett, came across as heelish, and I don't think that was the intent.
Also after shots of a limousine, with police escort, and constant promises that "Hulk Hogan is on his way!" When Hogan did come out within a minute he stated "I've been in the back all day, talking to the guys." Okay which is it: was he in the back all day, or traveling to the show?
The title match between Tara, and challenger ODB, was given two minutes--totally disrespectful of these two women, and their abilities.
Sting, stay in the rafters, please!
The Ugly:
The DQ ending to the opening cage match, this prompted chants of "Bulls--t" from the crowd--not I suspect, the reaction TNA was hoping for!
The final score B+ (I know I've griped, but I admire TNA's chutzpah! If they can sustain the momentum (and smooth out the rough spots) things could get very interesting.
Line of the night on either show "I guess hell froze over!" Bret Hart's first comment on Raw--the show of the promotion he once swore never to work for again.

Monday Night Wars Return--for at least one night
WWE has a competitor for the Monday night wrestling audience for the first time since they gobbled down last competitor, Ted Turner's WCW. Interestingly, though Dixie Carter goes head-to -head with Vince McMahon for the first time, familiar faces abound.
For Carter's promotion, TNA (Total Nonstop Action), Hulk Hogan, and Eric Bischoff, former star, and former GM of WCW respectively, are aligned with TNA. It is "just business-nothing personal," you just know that Hogan and Bischoff would love to rub Vince M.'s face in the dirt--just a little bit!
WWE is headlining with the return of Bret Hart who left WWE a dozen years ago after punching out McMahon after he (Hart) was doublecrossed in the infamous "Montreal Screw Job," and lost his title in a bit of genuine chicanery. Hart was bitter, and disillusioned, and swore never to work with WWE again. In wrestling years "never" has turned out to be twelve.
One can be certain that both promotions will have more surprizes, and swerves for their fans tonight. A little competition should rouse both organiztions from their doldrums. fans, and wrestlers should both benefit. I can't wait!

Two WWA title Changes at Somerset Hall
The January 3rd card, at Somerset Hall, saw both the singles and tag titles change hands. The action was witnessed by about 159 fans who enjoyed a night of "old school" action. In the opener, Tiger Jackson defeated the popular "D-Ray 3,000. Jackson was aided by interference from Pastor Pain, and Buck Lawless before winning with a roll-up and a handful of tights.
In the second match "The Crimson" (think heavy red face paint) beat Chris Kaufman with a "back cracker," and body press. Third bout was a Tag match pitting "The CIA," Denzell Titan, and "Black Velvet" putting their tag belts on the line against Andy Chene, and Sean Casey managed by Dr Jerry Graham, Jr.
Graham seemed to be teasing a heel turn, as Chene and Casey were breaking rules with total abandon. But in the end, Graham turned against his own team (it's Pro Wrestling folks!) who won by knocking out their opponents with a metal chain. So Chene, and Casey are now tag champs, and I predict a heel turn by Graham is on tap.
After an intermission, local favorite Brian Castle, "The New Age Patriot" met Sebastian Rose in a chain match. The competitors were chained together at the wrist, the competitor who touched all four corners first would gain the nod. Sebastian Rose won in controversial fashion, disappointing the fans who thought Castle had won. Can you say "rematch?"
In the next bout, WWA Champ, William Studd, put the title on the line against Bobo Brazil, Jr.
After about 5-6 minutes of back and forth action, Studd bobbled a body slam on Brazil, slamming him on his side rather than his back. The challenger seemed genuinely stunned, whick led to Studd having to carry the action until Brazil recovered enough to deliver a weak looking "koko butt" to gain the win, and the WWA Title.
In the main event of the evening, the former tag partners, "Alcatraz" and "Buck Lawless" (with Pastor Pain) engaged in a wild brawl that saw Lawless gain the win, after Pastor Pain threw powder into Alcatraz's face. That decision was reversed, which so incensed Pain and Lawless that they attacked the hapless commentator and gave him a spike pile driver. Of course that unfortunate was carried out by several faces.
Next card is February 2d at Somerset Hall.
